Campus Culture

Can I do teenager stuff at FVS? Absolutely! While you’ll work hard at Fountain Valley, there are plenty of opportunities to play hard, too.

Frautschi Campus Center

Students gather in the Frautschi Campus Center during free periods and on weekends to hang out, study together, order snacks from the RK Cafe and play ping pong, pool or video games. Flags hanging from the ceiling represent the countries of our international students

Your Weekend

Hooray for the weekend! You’ll have lots of choices for things to do both on campus and off, and every weekend is different. Activities include:

  • Movie bus to see the latest and greatest films
  • Humans vs. Zombies, a live-action game played across campus
  • Open swimming pool and climbing gym
  • Asian market trip
  • Yoga
  • Movies in the Campus Center
  • Food truck rally
  • Open maker space in the library
  • Skiing and snowboarding at Colorado’s great ski resorts
  • Shopping buses to Downtown Colorado Springs and other areas
  • Ice skating
  • Video gaming
Or, catch up on sleep and studies. The time is yours!

DANCES

FVS makes it a point to hold a number of fun dances throughout the year. In addition to traditional dances like prom, a sockhop and a winter formal, there are also events unique to FVS:

Stupid Night Out

You’ve never seen anything like Stupid Night Out, a tradition since 1983 at FVS. It is a celebration of all things "stupid," which means poking good-natured fun at pop culture, fashion, food and music. It’s nearly impossible to describe! Students dress in outrageous costumes and gather in the Campus Center to dance to stupid music, attempt to out-stupid each other with planned lipsyncs & skits, and revel in many more stupid festivities.

Barn Dance

Mosey on down to the barn and kick up your heels to country music. Warm yourself at the bonfire and make s’mores, learn to lasso, bob for apples and chow down on BBQ!

Ski / Ride Weekend

Head to the Mountain Campus just two hours away for two days of skiing or snowboarding at nearby Monarch Mountain. This is an opportunity for beginners and experts alike to experience floating through Colorado’s legendary powder snow. During the evening, you'll head to nearby natural hot springs for a soak in geothermal-fed bliss.

Lunar New Year

Fountain Valley rings in the Lunar New Year over several days with many colorful events that provide opportunities for our international students to share their traditions with the FVS Community. You’ll enjoy performances, special meals and games.

Unity Day

On Unity Day, the entire community spends a full day exploring cultures and deepening understandings of race, class, gender issues and cultures different than their own. With students from 16 countries, 25 states and diverse backgrounds, this is an opportunity to push beyond one’s comfort zone while celebrating that which makes us different from one another. There are more than 20 student- and faculty-led workshops. You can explore Pakistani culture, discuss the complexities of transgender athletes, learn about the struggles of homeless women or stand face to face with someone in Iraq through the “Portal.”

Earth Day

Students and faculty celebrate Earth Day through workshops and hands-on projects. Plant a bee garden and tend to the on-campus hives, clean up a nearby creek, learn plant-based cooking, build birdhouses for the prairie bluebirds —these are just a few of the activities that fill up Earth Day.
