Climbing

FVS proudly offers a 6,000-square-foot climbing gym–the largest high school climbing gym of its kind–to the members of its championship team. An increasingly popular sport best known for its unique vibe, camaraderie, and culture, climbing is available to athletes year-round at FVS. Whether a novice or advanced climber each student-athlete receives guidance from FVS’s accomplished coaching staff of expert climbers certified by the Climbing Wall Association.

Both physically and mentally challenging, FVS’s climbing routes are altered regularly to help student-athletes improve upon their skills. Meanwhile, hang boards and a campus board assist with individual strength and conditioning.

Mountain Biking

Travel the State and bike its spectacular Rocky Mountain terrain while competing in the Colorado High School Cycling League. Races often take place on the weekends and encompass two-day events with overnight camping in a festival-like environment.

FVS athletes benefit from training on the School’s extensive 1,100-acre campus trail system, which covers approximately 15 miles of rolling Prairie, as well as on nearby mountain trails. Led by experienced mountain biking coaches, students enhance their skills and establish close friendships that motivate them to tackle steep climbs and take in remarkable summit views.

Skiing & Snowboarding

In addition to offering skiing as an afternoon activity, the FVS Athletic Department is pleased to provide weekend skiing and snowboarding throughout the winter. Students grades nine through 12 enjoy shredding the slopes of the Rockies with their friends at popular resorts including Keystone and Breckenridge, with options for equipment rentals available to individuals in need of skiing and snowboarding gear.

Outdoor Education

Explore some of the most spectacular scenery and pristine wilderness the Rocky Mountains have to offer. Challenging weekend trips–ranging from skiing and snowshoeing atop the Boreas Pass to trail work in the Garden of the Gods–leave FVS students conquering 14’ers, rock climbing, and yearning for more as they develop their mountaineering, camping, backcountry safety, and orienteering skills. Students work throughout the week to improve their strength, flexibility, and endurance, with training regiments including spin sessions, weight lifting, swimming, and more in the Julie and Spencer Penrose Athletic Center, as well as hiking and running on nearby mountain trails.
