"One Angry Black Man" Screening with Director/Writer Melenek Lumumba

Menelek Lumumba ’02 was born and raised in Denver, Colorado and studied English and film at CC and Cinema at Howard University’s Master of Arts program. “1 Angry Black Man” is a conceptual feature film inspired loosely by the Hollywood drama “12 Angry Men” – but set within a black studies classroom at a liberal arts college. “1 Angry Black Man” provides a view of the difficult conversations young people have as they navigate the society in which they live, drawing from the intellect of master writers such as James Baldwin, Zora Neale Hurston, August Wilson and Ta-Nehisi Coates. It had its world premiere August 2018 at Philadelphia’s BlackStar Film Festival.

    TUNISIA SINCE THE ARAB SPRING

In 2011, Tunisia made world headlines after long-time autocrat Zine El-Abidine Ben Ali was deposed following mass demonstrations, triggering a wave of uprisings across the Middle East that saw the departure of three other Arab presidents.  Eight years later, Tunisia is the only country from the Arab revolutions of 2011 functioning as a democracy.
Join us January 24 to learn more about the outlook in this turbulent region.

    Chinese New Year Celebration

The New Year Celebration has become a mainstay cultural event in Colorado Springs due to the ever-increasing fascination of the Asian culture. This year’s event will continue the “celebration” atmosphere as in past years. Activities for this year will feature the traditional lion dance, Taiko, kung Fu demonstrations, traditional Chinese dances, Chinese yo-yo demonstrations and Chinese musical performances.   “Chinatown” offers an assortment of Asian-themed merchants and a “Taste of China” to whet your appetite from various food vendors.  Cultural performances will take place on the Main Stage; in the “Teahouse” you can drink a cup of hot tea, relax and eat snacks while enjoying Chinese instrument performance, Tai Chi and many other traditional demonstrations
