While you won’t find athletic training, culinary arts and fashion photography classes in the FVS course catalog, you will find students on campus diving deep into learning these skills. Through the Independent Senior Practicum, seniors can choose an area of interest and be guided by a professional in the field in this semester-long program.
Ky Dang '19 completed his ISP in culinary arts. He spent many hours in the FVS kitchen this spring, working alongside the dining hall staff and building his skills with Chef Juan Rodriguez and Sous-Chef Justin Cacciatore as his main sponsors.
Benji Wrubel '19 completed his ISP in athletic training. He learned about sports injury rehabilitation by spending every afternoon with Britta Pestak, FVS's athletic trainer, along with assisting her during home games. Benji also learned about fitness testing and sports nutrition by working alongside FVS's Strength and Conditioning Coach Francisco Aguilar.
Sakura Ido ’19 pursued her passion for photography and fashion by working with professional photographers Jen Lebo and Laurie Walker. Through her ISP, Sakura studied different fashion styles and learned about photography techniques and technology.
Fountain Valley students have explored a fascinating array of subjects through the ISP program including rocket technology, outdoor climbing certification, flight training, food rescue, graphic design, veterinary medicine, architecture/3D design, writing a novel, woodworking, pasture management, video game design, printmaking, baking, music production and robotics
Students interested in completing an Independent Senior Practicum submit a proposal to the ISP Committee and once approved must remain in good academic standing for the duration of their project. In addition to spending a minimum of 10 hours a week working on their ISP, students submit weekly journal entries and a mid-term progress report to track their learning. Each Independent Senior Practicum culminates in a presentation to the Fountain Valley School community.
