Alumni Awards 2020: Distinguished Alumni
As part of the 2020 Virtual Reunion, Head of School Will Webb recognized distinguished alumni who are pillars of the FVS community, stewards of the School, and have been instrumental in the success and growth of FVS.
The Young Alumni Award:
Kate Faricy Maiurro ’00
This award is given to outstanding younger alumni who are leading the way in their communities. These alumni model the School's core values of courage, compassion, curiosity, self-reliance, and open-mindedness, and have made remarkable achievements in their profession, career, or vocation.
Kate Faricy Maiurro ’00 was honored with this year’s award. She has answered a calling to serve nonprofits as her profession. She says, “It’s about making a difference in the city where I live and the people, places and causes that mean so much to me.”
After graduating from college, she landed a fellowship at El Pomar Foundation that set her on course to effectively serve nonprofits. Her first stop was Fountain Valley in 2006, where Kate worked as an admission officer for six years and then for the development office for six years, ultimately as director of development. She then moved on to Discover Goodwill of Colorado as director of development and is now on the front lines of fundraising, so to speak, as executive director of the Memorial Hospital Foundation. In her first 30 days there, she landed the foundation’s biggest gift in history, which was directed to the COVID relief fund.
The Elizabeth Froelicher Smith Distinguished Service Award:
Parker Wang P ’20
Chris Sanchez ’90, P ’22
This award is presented for exceptionally meritorious service to Fountain Valley School, and honors those whose actions and deeds help the School continue its rich heritage of educating talented young minds and without whom Fountain Valley would not be what it is today. This year, FVS honored two community members with The Elizabeth Froelicher Smith Distinguished Service Award- Parker Wang P ’20, and Chris Sanchez ’90, P ’22
Parker Wang P ’20 has provided exceptional leadership in service to the School. He is a member of the board of trustees and also an ambassador for the School in China where he proudly shares his Fountain Valley experience as a parent. He is a strong supporter of Fountain Valley as a major donor, fundraiser, and bridge between cultures, and also serves on the board’s Preservation, Maintenance and Construction Committee. Wang has hosted several receptions in Beijing for current and prospective families and alumni, and he formed the FVS Chinese Alumni Association to help keep Danes in China connected to the School and to each other. For our admission efforts, he reaches out to families to help them in their decision to choose Fountain Valley, and he is a trusted resource for current families, as well.
Chris Sanchez ’90, P ’22 has gone above and beyond in his service to the School as a dedicated trustee, alumnus and parent. He is the principal hydrologist at Bishop-Brogden Water Consultants in Denver, and former Colorado Governor Hickenlooper appointed him to serve on the Board of Examiners of Water Well Construction and Pump Installation. Sanchez’s expertise is invaluable in his role as chair of Fountain Valley’s Land Management Committee. He has helped see the School through a number of issues including research and mitigation work on the campus’s complex aquifer system, the ongoing restoration work of the pond that was wiped out by the 2019 bomb cyclone, and the upcoming installation of a communications tower. As a trustee, Sanchez champions diversity, equity and inclusion in all areas at Fountain Valley. He has been a highly engaged and supportive alumnus and parent, attending events on campus and around Colorado, proudly flying the Fountain Valley flag.
The Lewis Perry Jr. Alumni Award:
Janet Dulin ’77
This award is presented to the alumna or alumnus who provided strong leadership in supporting FVS during the preceding year. Janet Dulin ’77 proudly serves as a member of the Board of Trustees and Class Agent. She has been a trustee since 2017 and has co-chaired the School’s Annual Fund committee, leveraging her energy and enthusiasm to help motivate donors to surpass our Annual Fund goal last year. She also serves on the Board’s Committee on Trustees as well as the Preservation, Maintenance and Construction Committee. Dulin was a member of the Campaign Planning Committee that successfully completed Phase 1 of the campus master plan that resulted in the Julie and Spencer Penrose Athletic Center, new maintenance facilities and expanded faculty housing. She is also a committed supporter of the School as a long-time member of both the Casa Serena and the Elizabeth Sage Hare Societies.
Fountain Valley has deep roots in her family: husband and former FVS trustee Jim Dulin ’76, daughter Emily Rey ’11 and stepchildren Hunter Dulin ’07, Tyler Dulin ’09 and Callie Dulin ’11.
The Distinguished Casa Serena Society Member Award:
Houston Harte ’70
Presented annually, this award recognizes dedicated and significant leadership giving to the School exemplifying the principles and values of our founding benefactors.
Former Trustee Houston Harte ’70 is a philanthropist who has given consistently to the School at the Casa Serena Society level over the past 46 years, and who has stepped up with significant gifts for special projects. Harte has also given generously to the general endowment, the Lewis Perry Endowment for the Humanities, and the Creeden Endowment for Experiential Learning.
The Distinguished Alumni Award:
Hal Tearse ’70
This award is presented in recognition of extraordinary achievements that exemplify the principles and values of FVS in a profession, career or avocation, or for direct service to the local, national or international community.
Hal Tearse ’70 has spent nearly 50 years in youth development through the lens of hockey. He played varsity hockey at Fountain Valley for four years and won the “Dedication, Desire and Discipline” award his junior year. Tearse went on to play Division 1 hockey for the University of Minnesota where he began coaching while still a college student. He has coached at every level from squirts, to college, to Tier 2 Juniors. Currently, he is head boys hockey coach at Providence Academy in Plymouth, Minnesota. Tearse has also been a coach educator through the USA Hockey Coach Education Program. He served as Minnesota Hockey Coach-In-Chief for eight years and as Chair of the Safety Committee, working to significantly reduce player and coach injuries. Tearse has produced more than a dozen skills videos to help coaches develop their players, which have been viewed more than 200,000 times, and he has also written hundreds of articles about coaching. Tearse is also active with Spark-Y, a nonprofit that empowers youth with hands-on education rooted in sustainability and entrepreneurship. He says, “There’s no greater gift you can give kids than to mentor them and give them the kinds of lessons and the kinds of experiences they need to be successful as adults after hockey.”

FVS is a private, college-preparatory, co-ed, day and boarding school for grades 9-12 in Colorado Springs.
