Climbing & Mountain Sports

Adventure is yours for the taking in Colorado’s playground! The School takes full advantage of the Rocky Mountains’ generous landscape to provide you with a singular combination of opportunities that you won’t find anywhere else.

Climb the Walls

Fountain Valley School gained an early foothold in this fast-growing sport, winning multiple state championships and building a 6,000 sq.ft. climbing gym that is state of the art.

Learn to climb or advance your skills working with the accomplished coaches who are expert climbers and certified by the Climbing Wall Association. They have proven time and again that they can help put FVS climbers on the podium at state championships. The sport is challenging and it is as mental as it is physical—you could say it’s problem-solving with your body.

As a member of the FVS team, you’ll enjoy the special camaraderie that climbing fosters. It has a unique vibe and culture. You’ll have teammates shouting encouragement from below while you tackle a route above.

FVS Climbing Gym

  • 37-ft. walls
  • 30 rope routes
  • Ten auto belays
  • 30 boulder problems that range from a slab up to a 45-degree overhang
  • A tension board for training with more than 10,000 programmable boulder problems
  • Hang boards and a campus board for strengthening

Mountain Biking

Bring adventure into your life and travel the state competing on spectacular Rocky Mountain terrain against other schools in the Colorado High School Cycling League. You’ll train on the campus’s extensive trail system covering the School’s 1,100 acres of rolling prairie, as well as nearby mountain trails. Make progress learning mountain biking skills from experienced faculty coaches. Enjoy the close friendships you’ll make with teammates as you encourage each other up steep climbs and together experience the pure joys of summit views and amazing downhills.

The races are two-day events where you camp overnight. It’s a fun, festival-like atmosphere with riders’ families often joining in on the weekend excursion.

Outdoor Education

Explore some of the most spectacular scenery and pristine wilderness in the Rocky Mountains while developing mountaineering, camping, backcountry safety and orienteering skills. You’ll find yourself on challenging weekend trips conquering fourteeners, rock climbing and off-trail scrambling. On-campus sessions during the week work to improve strength, flexibility and endurance. The Athletic Center gives you workout opportunities that include spin sessions, weight lifting, swimming and more. You’ll also head to nearby mountain trails to hike and run. Weekend adventures may include a ski/snowshoe excursion to Section House hut atop snowy Boreas Pass, a mountain bike trip riding the smooth single track of Fruita, and trail work in the Garden of the Gods.

All Mountain Program

Do you like the crisp mountain air, the freedom you feel when you float through bottomless powder, the thrill of stomping cliffs or carving the perfect turn at high speed? Some of the best skiing in the world is right in our own backyard, and you can ride the mountains 30 to 40 times in the season if you want! Buses head to the ski resorts both Saturdays and Sundays.

For advanced skiers and snowboarders, the All Mountain Program (AMP) focuses on development and emphasizes all-around skiing/riding. You set realistic goals for the season and faculty coaches help you to improve on skills to meet those goals. For example, you may want to become a better powder skier, learn telemark or work on racing techniques (also include some kind of snowboard goal here).

During the week, AMPers will work on strength and agility training to get ready to hit the slopes on the weekend.
