Fountain Valley School photography students, under the direction of arts faculty Chris Hutchinson, continue to win awards locally in Colorado Springs and nationally. Photography class selections allow students to learn the basics only, or they can continue to AP Studio Art 2-D and create a portfolio.
This is a beginning course for students with little or no darkroom experience. This lab course, with some out-of-class time needed, covers using a 35mm camera, black and white film processing, printing and enlarging.
This course follows Photography I as a vehicle for student photographers to explore their own voice in the art form. With the basics of camera and darkroom techniques and an understanding of the principles and elements of photography as an art form, students take on the challenge of exploring the medium and expressing their personal inspiration in the photographic image. Students have the choice of working with black and white film or starting in the digital imaging lab.
This course follows Photography II as a further vehicle for student photographers to explore their own voice in the art form. With some advanced knowledge of camera and darkroom techniques and a firm grasp on the principles and elements of photography as an art form, students take on the challenge of exploring the medium and challenge themselves by going deeper into their personal inspiration in the photographic image.
AP Studio Art: 2D, usually part of a two-year sequence, is designed for students who are seriously interested in the practical experience of art, and photography is one of the options students can pursue.. Students submit an extensive portfolio of work for evaluation. Expectations for the quality of work are set at the college level, and students are admitted to this course through a demonstration of superior effort and achievement, self-motivation, and previous art experience. The portfolio will consist of approximately 30 works of art that excel in concept, composition and execution. Students enrolled in an AP course are required to take the corresponding AP exam in May.
