When it comes to learning beyond four walls, how did FVS expand your horizons?

Being interdisciplinary is vital, and FVS taught me to embrace that. At FVS, I had the opportunity to try many different things – from climbing to welding – that broadened my perspective and skill set. Post-high school, I enjoy learning new things simply to expand my knowledge. This approach has led me to pursue passions outside my professional realm, such as working at a coffee shop and running intramurals. 

Why do you feel that attending a boarding school was the right decision for you?

One of the greatest parts of attending FVS was the people I met. They gave me perspective, helped me develop as a person, and built the qualities I so admired in them in myself. The emphasis on becoming a good person and not just a good student was transformative.

What is your favorite FVS tradition? How did this event make being a part of the FVS community even more rewarding? 

ShakespeareFest was one of my favorite FVS traditions. I never really explored theater as an interest, but ShakespeareFest was a great introduction. Stepping into the character’s shoes and understanding their lines and motives made the experience enriching. The community gathering for this festival showcased each grade in a supportive atmosphere, breaking the disconnect between Shakespeare’s works and modern-day society. I loved looking around and seeing everyone laughing and admiring a good performance. 

which outstanding qualities drew you most to Colorado and Fountain Valley School?

I was drawn to Fountain Valley School not only because of its high-quality education, which prepared me for college, but also because of the opportunities it provided for experiential learning and academics through the lens of nature. The School’s commitment to a well-rounded, liberal arts education, combined with an outdoor and environmentally-minded approach offered a unique and comprehensive learning experience that I found extremely stimulating.

Did your relationship with faculty and staff positively affect your experience? If so, how?

The level of scholar, particularly among staff, was a big draw and my relationship with faculty and staff was one of the best parts of my FVS experience. I am still in regular contact with my old teachers, advisors, and coaches. The faculty genuinely care about students as individuals, supporting their development beyond academics. They were tremendously supportive of me, read through countless college essays, and provided clear, insightful perspectives.
