Greetings from the Prairie!

I’m Andy Watson, and it is an extraordinary privilege to serve as the Interim Head of School at Fountain Valley School.

My journey with FVS began 45 years ago when I arrived as a young and enthusiastic teacher, eager to share my passion for learning and really grow within an exceptional community.

The decade I spent here left a lasting impression on me, both personally and professionally. My experience at Fountain Valley helped launch a deeply rewarding career in independent education. Since then, I have had the privilege of serving at two outstanding schools, including 19  years as a Head of School, and on numerous independent school boards. Returning to FVS feels like coming home to a place that shaped my life in profound ways.

When alumni return to FVS they have similar feelings – I’ve witnessed this for many years. They were adventurous and courageous when they arrived as students, and then they formed friendships that last a lifetime. Growing up here, they were challenged academically, encouraged to explore and ask questions, and inspired to develop the confidence and character needed to thrive in an ever-changing world. Beyond the classroom, they were riding trails across the Prairie, building community at our Mountain Campus, competing in athletics, creating in the arts, and engaging in global experiences. At FVS, students discover who they are and who they can become. It is no wonder that the FVS alumni I’ve been fortunate enough to know over the years are some of the most interesting people I know; little do our new students know of the amazing FVS journey they will be on for the rest of their lives. 

As we celebrate 50 years of coeducation and look ahead to our Centennial in 2030, Fountain Valley is in a strong position. The School has deepened its connection to the American West through an innovative curriculum, strengthened student engagement and community life, and begun a campus transformation that will provide future generations with learning spaces worthy of our extraordinary setting.

A quotation from alumnus and former trustee Jerry Frautschi ’49 has stayed with me for years: “I hope my children grow up to love a place as much as I love Fountain Valley School.” I have shared those words many times because they capture something profoundly true. We are fortunate when we find places that shape us so deeply.
