College Counseling

Our Program

The College Counseling program begins formally in the sophomore year when students are assigned to a self-assessment course that assists them in identifying their abilities and strengths. This course is taught by members of both the College and School Counseling Offices and paves the way for an individualized college process predicated upon the student’s unique needs.
Beginning in the junior year, formal individual and group meetings with the College Counseling staff take place throughout the fall and spring to introduce students to all facets of the college process, including standardized testing, the college essay, creating the college list, selective college admission, letters of recommendation, and financial aid. The junior year concludes with a case studies program, in which admission representatives from a wide range of colleges and universities take students and parents through a mock admission committee exercise.
In the senior year, the college counselor works closely with the student to guide him or her through the application and decision-making process, including the common application, early admission and making a final decision. Believing that the college process does not end once the student has made his or her decision, the College Counseling Office carries out transitional programming called the Onward Program for all seniors, wherein important topics, such as time and stress management, networking and resume building, and campus safety are discussed.
The College Counseling Office also hosts many college representatives on campus each year, provides quality standardized test prep on campus to interested students, transports students to two separate college fairs, and hosts additional programming, such as speakers, on a regular basis. Taken all together, these components make up a program that we believe is developmentally sound and in line with the philosophy and values of our program and school.
