Change is the hope of the future…face it with courage and new energy.
– Timothy Knox, Fountain Valley's 4th Headmaster
It is with deep sadness that we share news of the passing of former Fountain Valley School Headmaster Timothy Knox on Friday, May 24, 2024. Tim assumed the role of head for FVS from 1978 until 1987, later becoming the 17th Head of School for Kimball Union Academy, a private boarding institution located in Plainfield, N.H.
A lifelong learner and gifted faculty, Tim held degrees from Dartmouth College and Columbia University. He led Fountain Valley with a mindset embracing growth and change, and is remembered for his impact on students, faculty, curriculum, weekend programming, college placement and the reputation of the School. Throughout his tenure at FVS, Tim curated a long list of accomplishments. Most notable is the framework he developed to heighten students' social and moral growth. In addition, he not only recommended renovations be made to the Fountain Valley dormitory known as Sage Hall, but spearheaded the construction of a new dorm, C. Dwight Perry Hall, known as the Solar Dorm for its passive solar technology.
As Tim’s tenure as FVS headmaster came to a close, he – after seeing the School transition to co-ed – encouraged Fountain Valley to address gender equality issues, pioneering conversations regarding the adequate representation of women holding athletic and academic positions. He even recommended adding psychology courses and encouraged faculty to incorporate learning about historical female figures into the curriculum. In his Class of 1979 Commencement address, he noted that “change is the hope of the future…face it with courage and new energy.”
Jim Wickenden, a Fountain Valley Board member at the time, said he had “developed an enormous respect for Tim’s courage, intelligence, and perseverance,” traits that resonate with the FVS community to this day.
Please join us in remembering Tim Knox for his meaningful contributions to Fountain Valley School.
