Honoring Girls and Women in Sports at FVS

Honoring Girls and Women in Sports at FVS

On National Girls & Women in Sports Day, we’re taking a moment to honor the generations of strong, talented, and determined female athletes who have shaped athletics at Fountain Valley School.

This year feels especially meaningful as we prepare to celebrate 50 years of coeducation at FVS. Since welcoming our first female students in 1976, girls’ athletics on the Prairie has grown from a bold new beginning into a powerful legacy.

The pioneers who started it all

One of our early trailblazers was Kathy Kardok ’77, among the first female students and athletes at

FVS. With her father serving as athletic director, Kathy stepped into a brand-new chapter in school history, making the most of every opportunity.

She competed in field hockey, swimming, basketball, and tennis, helping prove that coeducation would strengthen both the athletic program and campus culture. Kathy remembers forming deep friendships with the other girls who joined that first wave and feeling supported by classmates and faculty alike.

Looking back, she’s proud to have helped shape an environment where young women could thrive… on the field, in the classroom, and beyond.

From the Prairie to the Podium

The story of girls’ sports at FVS is truly a story of long practices, bus rides, tough losses, heartbreak, hard-fought wins, and lifelong friendships. Over the years, FVS female athletes have built programs from the ground up and raised the bar for what’s possible.

There have been plenty of milestone moments along the way, including:

The 1996 FVS Field Hockey Team

  • 1996 Field Hockey — State runners-up

  • Girls Soccer — State runner-up finishes in 2017 and 2023

  • 2024 Swimming — 200-yard freestyle relay set a new FVS school record at the Colorado State Championships

But beyond titles and records, these moments reflect something even bigger: teamwork, showing up for one another, pushing through adversity together, and celebrating every hard-earned victory side by side.

Laura Luckett ’80 earned All-America honors in diving, was a state champion, and went on to become an NCAA Division III Diving Coach of the Year. She has been inducted into both the FVS Athletic Hall of Fame and her college hall of fame after a career that included national competition and coaching.

Kizzy Bailey ’97 made her mark in track and field as a four-time state champion, winning the 100m twice, along with titles in the 200m and long jump. She also set four school records during her time at FVS.

Veronique Richardson ’02 was a state champion long jumper and standout multisport athlete at FVS, earning MVP honors in both basketball and volleyball. She also helped break a school record as part of the 4x100 relay team. Veronique went on to compete at the Division I level, continuing her athletic career with the Cal Bears.

Emy Hanna ’09 was a standout multi-sport athlete, serving as MVP and captain in both basketball and volleyball. She captained the 2007 IEA national championship team and became a three-time state champion in the high jump.

Kim Donaldson ’12 carried her FVS experience into collegiate athletics, playing NCAA Division III volleyball at Colby College and earning conference honors along the way. After college, she took on a new challenge in bobsledding, earning an invitation to try out for the U.S. Olympic team. Kim is also a member of the FVS Athletic Hall of Fame.

Maia Presti ’13 competed in collegiate diving for Claremont Mudd Scripps and later returned to FVS to give back as a diving coach, continuing the long-standing tradition of mentorship within Dane athletics.

Clare Hamilton ’15 has made her mark in mountain biking, winning national titles and competing at the highest levels of the sport. Known for her fearless riding style and love of the trail, Clare represents a new generation of athletes redefining what women’s sports can look like.

Annaliese Fricke ’22 continues that legacy today as a volleyball player at Williams College, where she’s become a key contributor on the court, stacking up starts, kills, digs, and blocks while competing in one of the country’s top Division III conferences.

And most recently, current FVS student Stella Rhee ’26 has set multiple school records in swimming during her time, adding another chapter to the growing story of Dane athletics.

Building the future, together

What connects every generation of FVS female athletes is resilience, teamwork, confidence, and perhaps the most important… the courage to try something new, whether that meant being among the first girls on campus in the 1970s or charging down mountain trails decades later.

As we celebrate National Girls & Women in Sports Day, and look ahead to 50 years of coeducation, we honor every athlete who has worn the Dane uniform, pushed herself, supported her teammates, and helped create the vibrant athletics community we have today.

Here’s to the pioneers, the competitors, the coaches, and the students still writing the next chapter.
