Signature Programs

Western Immersion

The Western Immersion Program is an interdisciplinary experience for sophomores that has its academic roots in the traditional FVS curriculum, yet lends itself to experiential learning.

The program is centered upon the notion that the landscape of the Mountain Campus offers a wonderful place to explore the connections between land and people. Teachers and students are in the field all day exploring the Collegiate Peaks wilderness, hiking above tree line, writing poetry, learning mountain ecology, studying the human history of Leadville, and creating art from the materials nature supplies.

WIP's inspiration came from the writings of American West historian and novelist Wallace Stegner, who believed that a landscape could inspire humans to their highest calling when they described it poetically in a process he called "poetry of place."

"We all learn side by side in a casual setting. WIP leaves all of us better able to appreciate the unique landscape of our western surroundings, and we come home a tighter and closer knit group because of the experience we have shared."
